Multi-Religion Family

This week, it was determined by consensus that my siblings, their children and I would have Easter dinner at my apartment. While there is plenty of time for me to create a menu, shop, cook, decorate, etc. for the event, one other task is usually performed by the host of our holiday diners together remains, that of saying a special “Grace”. The prayer need not be fancy, but we try to make it as inclusive as possible as not all of us practice the same faith.

This morning on my way to church, I felt inspired. The final version may change a bit, but here is my first draft:

Every one at the table will echo, “Rejoice” at the appropriate times.

Rejoice!

The time has come when the sleeping animals awake.

Rejoice!

The once departing birds return.

Rejoice!

Naked trees clothe themselves.

Rejoice!

Flowers struggle from beneath the ground.

Rejoice!

He has risen as He said!

Rejoice!

I think that this “grace” will go well with ham and/or lamb and/or rice among a group of Christians, Jews and Buddhists. Oh well. It is still Lent. I have plenty of time.
